How Does a CNG Kit Work? A Simple Explanation
A plain-English walkthrough of the main components in a CNG kit — the cylinder, reducer, injectors and switch — and how they work together.
The CNG Cylinder
CNG is stored as a compressed gas in a high-pressure cylinder, usually fitted in the boot or underbody of the vehicle. The cylinder is built to safety standards designed to withstand high pressure and everyday driving conditions.
The Reducer (Pressure Regulator)
Gas leaves the cylinder at very high pressure, far too high to feed directly into the engine. The reducer steps this pressure down in stages so the gas reaches the engine at a safe, usable pressure — this is one of the most important components in the whole system.
Injectors and the ECU
From the reducer, gas passes through injectors that meter it into the engine, controlled by a dedicated CNG ECU (or an add-on control unit working alongside your car's existing ECU). This unit manages fuel timing and quantity so the engine runs smoothly on gas.
The Fuel Selector Switch
A dashboard-mounted switch lets you choose between petrol and CNG, usually with an indicator showing which fuel is active and roughly how much CNG remains. Most sequential kits can switch fuels automatically if the CNG runs low.
Why Installation Quality Matters
Every component above has to be matched correctly to your engine and fitted precisely — incorrect tuning or poor-quality components are the most common causes of rough idling, mileage loss or safety issues after a conversion. This is why we use genuine MIJO and MOTOZEN components and follow manufacturer-recommended fitting procedures for every installation.
