How to Prepare Your Petrol Car for CNG Kit Fitment in Kolkata
A simple checklist to get your petrol car ready before a CNG conversion — from engine health and spark plugs to boot space, documents and what to expect on the day.
Start With a Healthy Engine
A CNG kit works alongside your existing engine, not instead of it. If the engine is already running rough, misfiring or burning oil on petrol, those problems usually carry over — and can feel worse — once the car runs on gas. Fitting a kit to an engine in good condition gives the conversion the best chance of running smoothly from day one.
If your car is due for a routine service or tune-up, it is worth getting that done before the conversion, or asking our team to check the engine when you bring the car in. Fixing basic issues first avoids confusing an existing engine fault with a problem in the new CNG system.
Spark Plugs, Air Filter and Ignition
Gas generally needs a strong, consistent spark to burn cleanly, so the ignition system matters more on CNG than many owners expect. Worn spark plugs, weak ignition coils or a clogged air filter are common causes of hesitation and misfiring after a conversion.
- Have the spark plugs inspected and replaced if they are worn — ask whether a different plug type or gap is recommended for CNG use on your engine
- Check or replace the air filter so the engine can breathe properly
- Mention any existing warning lights, starting trouble or rough idling to the technician upfront
Plan for Boot Space
In most cars the CNG cylinder is mounted in the boot, which means some luggage space will be taken up. Before your visit, think about how you use your boot day to day — family trips, luggage, work equipment — so you can discuss cylinder size and placement with the technician.
A larger cylinder gives more CNG range but takes more space. Our team can help you balance range against practicality for your specific vehicle. Please also clear the boot of personal belongings before you arrive so the fitting can start without delay.
Documents to Bring
Having your paperwork ready makes the process smoother, both on the day and afterwards when updating your records. As a general guide, bring the following — our team can confirm if anything else is needed for your case.
- Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
- Valid vehicle insurance policy
- A government-issued photo ID of the vehicle owner
What to Expect on the Day
A typical visit takes about 2.5–4 hours, depending on your vehicle and the kit being fitted. The work generally involves mounting the cylinder, fitting the reducer, injectors and wiring, tuning the system to your engine, and running leak and safety checks before the car is handed back.
Before you leave, ask the technician to show you how the fuel selector switch works, how to read the CNG level indicator, and when your first check-up is due. After the conversion, remember to update your RC and inform your insurer about the change in fuel type — rules can vary, so please confirm current requirements with your local RTO.
